The Mentlegen were a 2b2t group active between 2010 and early 2011—potentially making them the server's oldest group. The existence of this group became more widely known when its founder, Nyrab, rejoined the 2b2t community in May 2021.
History
In mid-November 2010, Nyrab joined 2b2t after seeing an advertisement for the server on /b/ Upon joining, he encountered a server that had been active for no more than a day or two, containing a spawn area that was still green with few damaged blocks, and only a few other players online.
Soon thereafter, Nyrab invited Artos2000 and Shibbyking to play with him, and The Mentlegen founded their first base inside a mountain less than 150 blocks from spawn. Due to the rarity of hacked clients at the time, the base was not found for at least a day despite its proximity to spawn. During this time, the group geared up and killed newfags.
Upon logging in the next day, group members discovered the base being actively looted. They attempted to defend, but did not prevail. After this loss, The Mentlegen restarted their progress from scratch, founding a second base underwater close to spawn because beds didn't work at the time.
At the end of 2010, The Mentlegen founded its third and final base of that year in the middle of a forest, under a tree near spawn. Notably, this base contained grass block at bedrock level which were naturally grown down from the surface, rather than manually placed, because Silk Touch enchantments were not added to the game for another 11 months. A download of this base is available on The Archive, and remnants of the base—including signs—were visible in Overworld spawn downloads as recently as 2018.
The group's next base, the Mentlefortress, was founded in early 2011, and included a vine-covered tower, which contained a bedrock to world height-limit mob spawner. This spawner, and others at the base, required 3 people AFKing to be productive. During this time, the group acquired stacks of resources, as well as enough TNT to grief anything they wanted, and they began destroying others' bases on the server more regularly. Additionally, several new members joined the group, including Sandulf, Wulfpleides, Sapler, Ashen Pelt, and bb_buster. In mid-2011, the group got bored of the base and adandoned/self-griefed it after a server update.
Soon, the group became active again by building an outpost and rebuilding/moving back into its own previously self-griefed Mentlefortress. At this time, Ajir, considered to be the group's best builder, joined The Mentlegen, and the group continued griefing and trolling.
Finally, the group became bored yep again, and Nyrab invited popbob to grief the base. This time, the group did not move onto another project, and disbanded permanently.
